Ohio Department of Education ELLCO Study Learning Point Associates and the Early Literacy Institute have been contracted by the Ohio Department of Education to conduct a study using the Early Language and Literacy Classroom Observation (ELLCO) tool. The purpose of this study is to identify teacher professional development needs in the area of literacy, and to examine the capacity of programs to offer effective literacy instruction. Recently, Mrs. Jenny Urch, Preschool Teacher at Windermere School, was randomly selected and was observed by consultants from the Ohio Department of Education. Pictured from left to right is Merrie Darrah, Consultant with the Ohio Department of Education - Office of Early Learning and School Readiness, Stephanie Zimomra, Consultant with Learning Point Associates and Mrs. Urch, Early Childhood Intervention Specialist. Mrs. Urch received a top rating in all areas which included: Oral Language Facilitation; Presence of Books; Approaches to Book Reading; Approaches to Children's Writing; Approaches to Curriculum Integration; Recognizing Diversity in Classroom; Facilitating Home Support for Literacy; and Approaches to Assessment. Pre-School Programs across the state will be notified shortly if additional teachers are randomly selected for the ELLCO observation/evaluation this spring or next school year.
